 Day 1: Arrival in Auckland

auckland geekytravelUpon arrival in Middle Earth a private transfer will drop you at your hotel in the center of Auckland. Prepare to be amazed when you open that special Geeky package for you when you enter the room. This day is at your leisure. Overnight in Auckland, one night.

 

Day 2:  matamata & waitomo

green dragon outside lightsPick up the rental car and drive to Matamata. It all began in the Shire -flying over the rolling countryside of the Waikato director Sir Peter Jackson decided to create Hobbiton here in Matamata. In the coming days you will visit the home of Bilbo Baggins and have a drink in the Green Dragon Inn. Today you experience one of the many highlights in this trip : a full Hobbiton movie set & farm tour. Overnight in Waitomo, two nights.

  DAY 3: Visiting The Shire

4 hairy feet waitomo tourYou will visit the stunning Denize Bluffs and the farm film location in the Mangaotaki Valley Piopio, near Waitomo on an organized tour. It's here that the troll and campfire scenes in "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" were filmed. The towering limestone Denize Bluffs, a primeval forest and massive rock formations on the Denize family farm, became the location for Staddle Farm and Trollshaws... and the home of "Sting"! You will stand exactly where Bilbo received Sting! Geeky stuff, right?  Overnight in Waitomo.

 

  Day 4: TONGARIRO NATIONAL PARK

Chateau tongariroStart the day with a beautiful drive to Tongariro. Martin Freeman loved the area that was home to the perfect Middle Earth scenery, with Mount Ngauruhoe as Mount Doom, surrounded by the rocky grounds of Mordor where the Orcs attacked Elves and Sam and Frodo captured Gollum. Stay at Chateau Tongariro - home to many of the cast during filming. Day out your leisure. Overnight in Tongariro, two nights.

See Emyn Muil, where the Hobbits were searching their way to Dagorland and the Black Gates beyond. Note: a good level of fitness is required for this excursion. Afternoon at leisure.  Day 6: wellington

Drive from Tongariro down to Wellington. Day at your leisure. This vibrant yet small capital has lots to offer.

  DAY 7: WELLINGTON

Enjoy an Orc lunch at Rivendel where Frodo recovered from his knife attack. A visit to the Weta cave for all essential Hobbit memoriabilia is one of the highlights of your entire journey. You get even get to see the place where the Fellowship Cloaks was made. Overnight in Wellington.

 Day 8:  the hobbit

Drop off the car at Wellington airport. Your plane is waiting to fly you across the beautiful sounds . Pick up your new rental car for your journey on the South Island. Stop at Pelorus Bridge where the hobbits escape down the river in Barrels. Drive up to Nelson. Free time at your leisure. Overnight in Nelson, two nights.

Day 9: nelson

From your comfortable lodge close to the National Park you can visit Mount Olympus (South of Rivendell) and Mount Owen (Dimrill Dale). A day to unwind a take in the nature and sights of the area.  DAY 10: methven and edoras

A long but beautiful drive to the land of Edoras. Overnight in Methven, two nights.

Day 12: The Battle of Pelennor Fields

You will have the opportunity to meet Dawn or one of the 200 other residents of the small town of Twizel who were employed on the movies for over a month. Relive the Pelennor Fields Battle. This classic tour is the tour of choice whether you’re a LOTR fan or just want to learn more about movie making, from finding locations, setting up stunts, visual effects, and finding extras for large armies! This tour takes in the all of the major scenes filmed in and around Twizel. Overnight in Twizel, one night.

 Day 13: meeting the props around wanaka

wanaka geekytravelTake a well deserved break in the place where many of the actors cast and crew came from: Wanaka. You don’t have to go far to bump into a towns person, elf, dwarf, goblin, troll or wizard. Many of these same people are also hosts at accommodation and activity operations and will be happy to share their stories with you. Rumour has it that a town’s person recently hosted Ori (younger brother to Nori and Dori) and his family. Overnight in Wanaka, one night.

 day 14: TE ANAU

Drive down to one of most beautiful regions of New Zealand. Te Anau was a base for a number of The Two Towers locations including the Great River Anduin, Fangorn Forest and The Dead Marshes. Free day at leisure. Overnight in Te Anau, two nights.

Day 15: te anau and the milford sound

Feel the excitement of the the soaring eagles flying the Hobbits along the Sutherland Falls and experience the Awe –inspiring backdrop of the many movies. Free day at leisure. day 16: queenstown

 The last few days are spend in Central Otago known for its amazing natural light Peter Jackson loved. Queenstown is the world capital of adrenaline. Have fun! Overnight in Queenstown, two nights.

Day 17: movie locations

You will visit the filming locations for Isengard, the Ithilien Camp, Lothlorien forest and the Seat of Seeing/ Battle of Amon Hen, plus the latest filming locations from The Hobbit trilogy. One last shot of Hobbit joy!  Overnight in Queenstown.

 Day 18: Leaving Middle Earth

Drop off the rental car and fly from Queenstown for your connecting flight out of Middle Earth: Goodbye and Geek on!
